Arbitrum's development team is incorporating zero-knowledge proofs into its settlement architecture to enable faster withdrawals to Ethereum. The initiative aims to compress Arbitrum-to-Ethereum L1 settlement from several days down to several hours, while also boosting capital efficiency for users, bridge operators, and protocols built on the platform. The multi-proof model maintains security through layered verification mechanisms rather than relying on a single proof type.
The technical foundation is already partially in place. Arbitrum has demonstrated the ability to generate ZK proofs for live mainnet blocks, integrated WASM-based Stylus contracts into the proving pipeline, and deployed a standalone Rust verifier. The BoLD settlement protocol now accepts ZK proofs and coordinates them with a fast confirmation committee, while original dispute games remain as a fallback, creating redundancy across proof mechanisms. Work continues on reducing proof generation costs and migrating code into the Nitro production chain.
Deployment on mainnet requires DAO approval, which has not yet been submitted. The roadmap includes further proof optimization, a transition to Reth-based execution, completion of L1 message inbox proofs, and node-level configuration options to activate ZK settlement on a per-chain basis. The timeline for these phases remains unspecified.
