A minority fork aligned with BIP-110 emerged at Bitcoin block height 961,632, with the Roughnecks mining pool producing blocks 961,632 and 961,633 on the alternative chain. Meanwhile, the mainchain advanced to block 961,651, establishing an 18-block lead. The divergence occurred as Bitcoin's mining difficulty adjusted to 127.48 T, creating an immediate disadvantage for the BIP-110 fork, which operates with substantially less hash power at the same difficulty level, resulting in slower block production.
The disparity between computational resources and difficulty settings has made progression increasingly challenging for the minority chain. Matthew Kratter, a BIP-110 supporter, stated that the fork would need a "massive change" to catch up to the mainchain. The gap has prompted some within the BIP-110 community to explore alternative approaches, with discussion underway regarding a potential shift to a different proof-of-work algorithm.
The technical hurdle remains unresolved: without either a dramatic increase in aggregate hash power committed to the fork or a modification to its consensus rules, the minority chain faces persistent difficulty in competing with the mainchain's growing block height.
