Brave announces Roadmap 4.0 with BAT token buybacks funded by BravePay, Wallet, and Rewards Card revenue.

Brave has unveiled Roadmap 4.0, a strategic expansion of its Basic Attention Token ecosystem that introduces BAT buybacks funded by revenue streams from BravePay, its unified wallet, and a stablecoin-backed Rewards Card. The initiative marks a shift in how BAT functions beyond its original advertising-focused model, extending token utility into payments, creator compensation, and merchant settlement. The roadmap also encompasses a unified in-browser wallet integrating traditional payment methods with self-custody crypto and Brave Rewards, alongside open-source developer SDKs for merchants and app builders.
The expansion responds to shifting Web economics driven by AI adoption, cashless payment systems, and creator funding challenges. Brave's buyback mechanism ties token repurchases directly to transactional revenue, creating a revenue-dependent support structure rather than relying solely on advertising. Additional initiatives include the Machine Payments Protocol for autonomous agentic payments, a Creator Contribution Protocol for compensating verified creators when their content appears in AI systems, and the BravePay protocol layer enabling private on-chain transactions.
The roadmap's success depends on adoption of its new payment infrastructure and the magnitude of revenue generation from BravePay and card products. Whether creator compensation mechanisms and merchant integrations achieve meaningful penetration remains unproven, and the interplay between these initiatives in driving BAT demand has not yet been tested at scale.
