CMTA launches CMTAT Confidential, a security-token standard with encrypted balances and transfers using Zama's fully homomorphic encryption.

The Capital Markets and Technology Association has introduced CMTAT Confidential, a new version of its open security token standard that uses Zama's fully homomorphic encryption to encrypt token balances and transfer amounts directly on-chain. The implementation combines FHE with multi-party computation for threshold decryption and zero-knowledge proofs for input validation, built collaboratively with OpenZeppelin's Confidential Contracts library.
The release addresses institutional adoption challenges in capital markets by layering privacy protections onto CMTAT's existing compliance framework. The standard already included whitelisting and governance controls; CMTAT Confidential extends that modular architecture to encrypt sensitive transaction data while preserving role-based access controls for minting, burning, pausing, and forced transfers. Issuers can adopt confidentiality selectively, applying the cryptographic overhead only to modules requiring privacy while keeping other lifecycle functions unchanged.
The implementation remains blockchain-agnostic under open-source licensing, available across different ecosystems. Whether this encrypted variant will drive institutional adoption at scale, and how regulators will respond to privacy-preserving security tokens, remain open questions.
