MetaMask launches new wallet protections to flag suspicious transfers and prevent mismatched transaction previews.

MetaMask announced new wallet protections designed to warn users of potential scams and prevent transaction execution errors. The rollout includes warnings for lookalike addresses, investment and romance fraud schemes, and transfers to first-time recipients across mobile and browser extension platforms. A separate feature called Added Protection automatically reverts transactions that deviate from their previews, launching first on the browser extension with mobile support to follow.
The protections address a gap in user behavior: MetaMask's product team found that users often disregarded scam warnings because they either trusted the recipient or were being coached to proceed despite alerts. The new system pairs enhanced detection—powered by security partner Blockaid's AI models analyzing onchain bytecode, website content, and social feeds—with a support pathway that connects uncertain users to a person rather than simply blocking the transaction.
The announcement arrives as law enforcement escalates action against fraud infrastructure. U.S. authorities seized over $25 million linked to investment and romance schemes in July, and the Secret Service froze $52.8 million tied to a Telegram-based scam service marketplace earlier this month. The timing also coincides with Consensys's planned separation of consumer and institutional divisions by the end of 2026.
