Monad developers have proposed a wallet upgrade that would allow users to rotate the cryptographic keys controlling their accounts while keeping the same address. The upgrade targets three objectives: enabling passkey-based account recovery, introducing post-quantum cryptographic protections, and maintaining address stability across key changes—a design that differs from approaches being evaluated by Bitcoin and Ethereum.
The mechanism permits users to replace compromised or lost keys without migrating funds to a new wallet address, reducing friction for account recovery and key management. By supporting passkeys alongside quantum-resistant algorithms, the proposal aims to address both near-term key loss scenarios and longer-term risks from quantum computing advances.
The proposal remains in early stages; it is not yet clear how Monad will integrate this mechanism into its consensus rules, what timeline applies, or how the upgrade will handle interactions with existing smart contracts and cross-chain bridges.
