POAP, the NFT proof-of-attendance protocol, is winding down operations after 5+ years.

POAP, an NFT proof-of-attendance protocol that operated for over five years, is winding down operations. During its tenure, the platform minted millions of collectibles across hundreds of communities and partnered with organizations including Coinbase, American Express, Warner Music Group, and Bayer. Among its notable activations was a week-long event at Devcon that produced over 8,000 collectibles, and an Airport Rally program that distributed POAPs across airports worldwide.
The shutdown reflects structural challenges inherent to building in crypto. The team cited cryptocurrency's funding cycles and distribution dynamics as obstacles to establishing a sustainable business while preserving the community-focused ethos that defined POAP's value proposition. Operating on a rapidly evolving technical stack during a speculative boom further complicated operations and long-term viability.
The closure underscores tensions between product integrity and market forces in crypto infrastructure. While POAP achieved meaningful engagement at events, classrooms, and hackathons, sustaining that connection without compromise proved incompatible with the sector's commercial pressures. No timeline for a successor project or alternative use of the POAP infrastructure has been announced.
