Starknet has deployed a privacy pool for ERC-20 tokens on mainnet, enabling shielded balances and confidential transfers through a mechanism called STRK20. The system integrates with Ready and XVerse, allowing users to conduct private transfers while maintaining the underlying token structure without creating a derivative or modifying the original token contract. Private transfers obscure asset type, amount, and wallet addresses using zero-knowledge proofs and charge fixed per-transaction fees rather than percentage-based costs.
The architecture addresses a tension between privacy and compliance by incorporating scoped viewing keys, which grant regulators a non-invasive audit path into the privacy pool without exposing the entire system. This design choice reflects an attempt to balance user confidentiality with regulatory oversight. The mechanism applies specifically to shielded USDC balances and unshielding flows back into standard ERC-20 transactions on mainnet.
