Sui achieves 40.6M TPS in live test, doubling its 20M target via programmable tunnels.

Sui achieved 40.6 million transactions per second in a live demonstration at its Basecamp conference in Singapore, exceeding its 20 million target and more than six times its previous record of 6 million TPS set in July. The throughput was measured via Sui tunnels, which function similarly to Lightning Network payment channels but remain programmable, allowing applications beyond payments. The test, run by Adeniyi Abiodun of Mysten Labs, was independently audited by CertiK, with participants opening over ten thousand tunnels across categories including chat, games, and payments.
Sui tunnels operate by settling to mainnet only when closed, with each tunnel requiring mutual signatures and onchain verification. This design enables transactions to occur offchain and gaslessly while maintaining cryptographic proof against tampering. During the test, over ten thousand tunnels opened on Sui mainnet within seconds, demonstrating capacity for concurrent activity. The framework targets the emerging market of AI agent transactions, which Abiodun characterized as requiring a "trust layer" rather than direct onchain processing of every interaction.
CertiK is expected to publish a full audit report examining execution logs, proofs, and supporting evidence in the coming days. The independent analysis remains pending, and the practical implications for production network conditions outside this controlled demonstration have not yet been established.
