East Texas A&M students claim to have developed the first post-quantum security implementation for Bitcoin's Lightning Network. Post-quantum cryptography addresses the structural risk that quantum computers pose to blockchain systems, as algorithms like ECDSA underlying Bitcoin could theoretically be broken by sufficiently powerful quantum machines, though such systems do not currently exist. The development comes as the crypto industry faces pressure to adopt quantum-resistant standards following NIST's December 2025 guidance on cryptographic agility.
