Unstoppable Domains abandons ICANN standardization for Web3 domains (.crypto, .wallet, .NFT, etc.), citing high compliance costs and a small market.

Unstoppable Domains has decided against pursuing ICANN standardization for its Web3-native domain extensions, according to founder Matthew Gould. The company will not submit applications for .crypto, .wallet, .NFT, .Bitcoin, .DAO, and .ZIL to ICANN's 2026 gTLD round and plans to refund affected customers.
The decision stems from financial constraints. Gould cited compliance, application, and potential bidding expenses as likely to outpace revenue from the Web3 domain market, which he characterized as "small" and "niche." The cost-benefit analysis determined that the investment required for ICANN entry did not justify the market opportunity.
The domains will remain operational as on-chain assets usable for crypto transactions but will not gain access to the traditional DNS infrastructure at this time. The company's pivot underscores the structural challenges facing Web3 domain projects seeking mainstream internet legitimacy through conventional governance channels.
