Ethereum researchers have outlined a multi-year development plan called "Lean Ethereum" that will fundamentally reshape the protocol over three to four years, according to Vitalik Buterin. The roadmap prioritizes replacing nearly every major protocol component, including verification through recursive STARKs as an enshrined core component rather than direct re-execution, eliminating quantum-vulnerable cryptography with quantum-safe alternatives, and redesigning consensus for faster finality with simpler mechanics. State structure itself will be reconceived to include new scalability-friendly types alongside the existing dynamic state model.
The plan reflects a shift in Ethereum's architectural philosophy, treating Lean Ethereum as the protocol's third major iteration in the tradition of the Merge. Privacy is now a first-class design goal rather than an afterthought, with formal verification required across components. H-star (Hegota) is expected to be the last "pre-Lean" fork; subsequent upgrades from I-star onward will embody Lean principles. The state redesign permits new restricted state types—including UTXOs, keyed nonces, and ring buffers—that scale substantially but do not require existing applications to migrate, though rewriting to these models could yield tenfold fee reductions.
Several mechanics remain under active exploration. The exact design of new state types and their interaction with existing protocols continues to be refined. Quantum-safe blobs design, flagged as urgent, is already underway but not yet finalized. The extent of adoption for new-style state across the ecosystem, and the timeline for each component's rollout, have not been specified.
