Vitalik proposes EIP-8288 to support arbitrary signature schemes via STARKs, potentially eliminating future Ethereum precompile additions.

Vitalik Buterin has proposed EIP-8288 as a mechanism to support arbitrary cryptographic signature schemes on Ethereum. Under this approach, users would generate signature schemes locally, prove their validity using STARKs, and have them included on-chain via a stark aggregator—all without requiring calldata to be posted directly to the network. Buterin suggested this design could eliminate the need for Ethereum to deploy new precompiles in the future.
The proposal represents a shift in how the network might handle cryptographic extensibility. Rather than hardcoding support for new signature algorithms as protocol-level precompiles, EIP-8288 would allow arbitrary schemes to be validated through cryptographic proofs. Lattice-based schemes present a partial exception; these could still be supported through precompiles if they are proven to be resistant to AI-based attacks on accounts and wallets.
The practical implications and timeline for EIP-8288's adoption remain unclear. It is not yet known whether this approach will be implemented or whether it will achieve the stated goal of eliminating future precompile additions entirely.
