Zcash founder announces formal proof for Ironwood shielded pool security is nearly complete, driving ZEC above $500 and signaling resolution of previous vulnerability concerns.

Zcash's price briefly exceeded $500 after founder Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn announced that the project's Tachyon Formal Verification initiative is approaching completion of a mathematical proof confirming the security of its new Ironwood shielded pool. The announcement comes as the ecosystem works to rebuild confidence following the discovery in May of a hidden counterfeiting vulnerability in Orchard, Zcash's previous primary shielded pool. That flaw was patched through a network upgrade, though its undetectable character prompted development of Ironwood as a replacement pool built on Orchard's corrected design.
The verification effort for Ironwood combines formal verification, security audits, and frontier AI tools to validate the correctness of the protocol. The transition will include a turnstile mechanism that lets users transfer funds from Orchard to Ironwood while simultaneously demonstrating that no counterfeiting occurred. Payments within the older pool will be disabled, establishing a defined upper limit on ZEC's circulating supply.
ZEC has climbed nearly 20% over the past week from around $410, though it pulled back from its $500 peak to settle near $480. Technical analysts point to a compound resistance level around $480 where a descending trendline and horizontal resistance converge, with a break and hold above that threshold potentially required to sustain momentum back toward $500. What remains unclear is whether the formal proof will be delivered on the stated timeline or if broader market conditions will sustain the price move.
