Citadel Securities invests $400M in Crypto.com at $20B valuation in the exchange's first major institutional raise.
VC & Fundraising ·
Citadel Securities has committed $400 million to Crypto.com at a $20 billion valuation, marking the platform's first institutional funding round. The investment signals growing confidence from traditional finance participants in centralized cryptocurrency infrastructure.
Crypto.com operates as a multifaceted digital-asset platform spanning spot and derivatives trading, a prepaid Visa card program, a Layer 1 blockchain called Cronos, and non-custodial wallet services. The company, founded in Hong Kong in 2016 and rebranded after acquiring its domain name in 2018, is now headquartered in Singapore and holds regulatory credentials across the EU, Australia, Canada, South Korea, and the UAE. Its native token, CRO, functions within the ecosystem for staking, transaction fees, and governance.
The deal's significance lies in attracting major institutional capital at a time when centralized exchanges face both regulatory scrutiny and competition from decentralized and onchain alternatives. Details regarding the round's lead structure, any board seats or governance rights, and whether additional institutional backers participated remain undisclosed.
