Circle launches monetization tools for API providers using x402 and its Agent Stack, enabling autonomous AI agents to pay-per-use for endpoints with USDC.
AI & Agents ·
Circle has introduced monetization tools enabling API providers to charge autonomous AI agents per request using USDC stablecoins. The offering combines x402, an HTTP-native payment standard, with Circle's Agent Stack to facilitate direct, automated transactions between machines without traditional account infrastructure or subscription barriers.
x402 revives the dormant HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code to standardize how web services settle stablecoin payments directly within HTTP requests. Rather than bolting checkout flows onto applications, the protocol embeds payment negotiation into the web layer itself, allowing agents to pay for search, data scraping, browser automation, and similar services as they execute tasks. Within roughly a year of deployment, the standard has processed hundreds of millions of such transactions, with over ninety percent occurring on Coinbase's Base network and transaction values shifting from experimental micropayments toward larger transfers.
The broader integration remains in early stages. Major infrastructure providers including AWS, Solana, and BNB Chain are adopting x402 compatibility, yet the extent to which agent-to-agent payment flows will replace traditional API models remains unclear. Specific details about Circle's monetization tooling, fee structures, and adoption metrics have not yet been disclosed.
