Coinbase Agents now support trading 6,000+ stocks with x402 enabling direct USDC payments for live market data.
AI & Agents ·
Coinbase Agents can now execute trades across 6,000+ stocks, with x402—an HTTP-native payment standard—enabling agents to pay for live market data and analytics directly using USDC from their stablecoin balances. The update expands the capabilities of AI-driven trading infrastructure to operate more autonomously in traditional asset markets.
x402 revives the long-dormant HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code to allow web services and AI agents to settle payments directly within ordinary HTTP requests using stablecoins like USDC on networks including Base, Solana, and BNB Chain. Base has reported that AI agents are already spending millions via x402 for various data services and task completion. The standard removes the need for traditional API keys, subscriptions, or human-centric checkout flows, letting software operate as paying customers at internet scale rather than requiring external billing systems.
The protocol has processed hundreds of millions of agentic payments in roughly a year since launch, with the majority running on Base. However, adoption specifics for Coinbase Agents' stock trading integration—including transaction volumes, supported brokerages, or settlement mechanics—remain unclear. It is not yet specified whether this capability extends to real-time execution, options trading, or what guardrails govern agent trading behavior at scale.
