MoonPay rolls out AI payment vault for ChatGPT and Claude

The crypto payments company has launched PayBox, a system that lets AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude initiate crypto and card transactions on a user's behalf.
MoonPay's new product places a secured vault between an AI agent and a user's funds, according to The Block, which reported that the vault is protected with multi-party computation, passkey authentication, and spending limits set by the user. That structure is meant to let an assistant carry out a payment instruction without the agent itself holding direct custody of funds, while the person using it retains a ceiling on how much can move and how.
The launch extends a pattern already visible elsewhere in MoonPay's product line. The company had previously integrated crypto payments into OpenClaw AI agents running on Rumble Cloud, letting users buy, swap, and manage crypto directly through chat with no separate setup step. It has also placed an onramp inside ChatGPT's App Store, a move described as the first crypto onramp built directly into OpenAI's platform, supporting purchases through Apple Pay tokens. PayBox pushes that same agent-facing approach further by giving the assistant a defined channel for initiating payments rather than just facilitating a purchase.
The rollout sits alongside a run of other MoonPay integrations disclosed around the same period, including a fiat onramp built into Nansen for in-app purchases via card, Apple Pay, and Google Pay, a partnership with WalletConnect and Ingenico enabling stablecoin payments at retail checkout without merchants holding crypto directly, and a tie-up with Moto Card to fund crypto-backed Visa Infinite cards through MoonPay's Virtual Accounts. Paysafe has also partnered with MoonPay to enable crypto deposits tied to the US iGaming market. Together these releases point to a company treating AI agents as one more payment rail alongside cards, wallets, and stablecoin settlement.
What remains unclear from current disclosures is how PayBox's spending limits are configured in practice, what transaction categories or merchants the vault supports at launch, and whether Claude's integration mirrors the ChatGPT App Store setup or follows a separate technical path. Also unaddressed is how MoonPay's MPC custody model for PayBox compares with its existing institutional MPC custody offering, and whether other AI assistants beyond ChatGPT and Claude are expected to gain access to the vault.
