Ripple joins x402 Foundation to back AI agent payment standard

Ripple has signed on as a premier member of a Linux Foundation-hosted body overseeing an open payments protocol built for machine-driven transactions.
Ripple is now among the firms backing the x402 Foundation, a newly operational organization under the Linux Foundation umbrella tasked with governing x402, an open protocol originally contributed by Coinbase, according to CryptoPotato. The protocol is built to let AI-driven agents, applications, and APIs move money within ordinary web interactions, treating a payment much like any other piece of exchanged data. Coinbase and Circle have also joined as members alongside Ripple.
The underlying goal is to prepare infrastructure for a shift already underway: AI agents moving beyond simple suggestions toward directly purchasing services, tapping paid APIs, and closing out transactions without human intervention at each step. To keep that infrastructure from being controlled by any single company, the foundation is structured around open, vendor-neutral governance meant to accommodate multiple networks and payment rails rather than favor one.
Ripple says its XRP Ledger already has infrastructure built to work with x402, which would let AI agents transact using XRP as well as the company's RLUSD stablecoin. Markus Infranger, senior vice president of RippleX, said open standards such as x402 lay groundwork for machine-to-machine payments that are trusted and interoperable, per the same report.
The move extends beyond Ripple's involvement. NEAR Foundation has separately partnered with the x402 Foundation to help develop open payment standards aimed at the same AI-agent use case, pointing to broader industry interest in establishing shared rails for autonomous transactions rather than competing, siloed approaches.
What remains unclear is how quickly agent-driven payments using x402 will move from infrastructure readiness to actual deployed transaction volume, and how the foundation's vendor-neutral governance will function in practice once more networks and payment methods are folded in. Coverage of the foundation's membership and roadmap so far draws from two distinct sources, leaving details on adoption timelines and technical specifics still to be filled in.
