x402 protocol settlement volume dropped 93% year-to-date amid cooling agentic AI hype, though infrastructure expansion continues with Cloudflare integration.

Settlement volume on the x402 protocol has contracted 93% year-to-date, according to market analyst Jamie Coutts, who cited the decline as evidence that enthusiasm around the agentic AI economy has cooled from its late-2025 peak. The seven-day average now stands near $41,800, compared to daily peaks that had reached $800,000 to $1 million during the final quarter of 2025. Over the past three months, the metric has fallen 55%.
The slowdown contrasts with active infrastructure development aimed at enabling machine-to-machine payments. Cloudflare launched its Monetization Gateway in July, enabling customers to charge for pages, APIs, datasets, and tools using x402-powered stablecoin settlement. Ripple joined the x402 Foundation as a premier member, signaling support for the protocol as a standard for interoperable payments between agents. The XRP Ledger already supports x402 transactions.
Coutts characterizes the current contraction as temporary rather than terminal, predicting renewed activity as adoption of agent harnesses increases in the fourth quarter. Whether that recovery materializes remains unclear; the present gap between infrastructure expansion and actual settlement volume suggests expectations about agent-driven payments have outpaced real-world demand.
