BIS research warns that DeFi stablecoin yields are driven by protocol-specific risks rather than Fed rates alone, emphasizing the importance of evaluating collateral quality and liquidation depth before chasing APY.
DeFi & Yields ·
Research on stablecoin lending pools indicates that DeFi yield rates have historically shown substantial volatility and do not move in lockstep with federal-funds rates, contrary to common assumptions among yield-seeking participants. Protocol-level variables—including total value locked, the specific stablecoin denomination, and underlying blockchain—often exert greater influence on rates than monetary-policy benchmarks alone.
When evaluating a high-APY pool, the operative question shifts from simple earning potential to the underlying risk composition the yield represents. Key due-diligence factors include borrower demand dynamics, collateral quality, liquidation depth, oracle design, smart-contract exposure, incentive-emission structures, and exit liquidity conditions. In DeFi markets, yield functions as a price mechanism for a distinct bundle of risks—smart-contract vulnerability, depeg exposure, and liquidation cascade risk—that traditional savings vehicles do not carry.
What remains unresolved is how individual pools will perform as market conditions shift. The material notes that advertised APYs are variable and can decline rapidly, and that liquidation and depeg risks may ultimately exceed the stated yield premium, but does not forecast which pools or assets face higher-order stress.
