Circle is building a vertical stack for USDC to enable AI agents to initiate payments in agentic commerce.
DeFi & Yields ·
Circle is constructing a dedicated infrastructure stack around USDC to serve agentic commerce, where artificial intelligence agents are now initiating payments directly rather than merely facilitating human transactions. This represents a structural shift in how the payments industry operates—traditionally designed around human-to-human flows, payment infrastructure now must accommodate human-to-agent and agent-to-agent transactions as AI systems gain autonomy in economic decision-making.
The existing payment architecture, which has remained largely unchanged for decades, routes transactions through multiple layers: processing gateways, card networks, and banking institutions before settlement occurs over one to two business days. Circle's vertical stack for USDC addresses inefficiencies in this model by consolidating settlement directly on stablecoin rails, eliminating intermediaries designed for traditional consumer-to-merchant flows. Some projections forecast trillions in agentic commerce volume over the next five to ten years, though present-day transaction volumes remain in early stages.
What remains unclear is the timeline for meaningful adoption of agent-initiated payments at scale, the specific technical architecture Circle has deployed, and how existing payment incumbents may adapt their infrastructure to compete in this shifted landscape. The extent to which regulatory frameworks will accommodate or constrain agent autonomy in payment initiation is also unresolved.
