Deep dive on how privacy and proof-of-reserve techniques (zkTLS and FHE) could address DeFi lending's overcollateralization problem by enabling credit assessment without revealing sensitive data.

DeFi lending protocols struggle with borrower assessment because they lack visibility into offchain information, forcing reliance on overcollateralization as a risk mitigant. Primus Labs is advancing this landscape through zkTLS, a technique that authenticates data from websites and APIs while withholding the underlying details. According to Primus's development timeline, real-time proof-of-reserves functionality for UnitasLabs' USDu launched in May, followed by a zkTLS verification layer on BNB Chain in June; the team is also collaborating with Brevis and BNB Chain on ZKredit, a credit assessment initiative designed to maintain privacy.
The technical complementarity between zkTLS and fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) offers a framework for addressing overcollateralization. FHE enables computations to execute directly on encrypted data, while zkTLS validates external claims without exposing sensitive details. Implementation details matter: a confidential vault design can encrypt asset amounts while keeping wallet addresses visible, creating a user experience that flows without compromising privacy.
A fundamental constraint persists: zkTLS can verify what a data source reported but cannot establish the truthfulness of that source itself. The reliability of any privacy-preserving credit system depends equally on the integrity of the underlying information source, the robustness of the proof mechanism, and the soundness of the application layer. Adoption by major market participants will likely depend on demonstrated security across all three elements.
