Ethena adds tokenized equities as USDe collateral through Binance
DeFi & Yields ·
Ethena is extending its delta-neutral basis-trade model beyond crypto into tokenized stocks, using Binance's bStocks and equity perpetuals as new hedging instruments for its USDe stablecoin.
The move, announced by Ethena, makes Binance the first venue where the protocol will run its basis strategy on equities rather than only crypto assets like ETH and BTC, according to a post from Ethena. Under the existing mechanism, USDe is minted against collateral paired with an offsetting short position so that price moves in the underlying asset are neutralized; applying that same structure to tokenized stocks means Ethena would hold bStocks as collateral while shorting equity perpetuals to keep the position delta-neutral.
The expansion is significant because it widens the pool of assets Ethena can draw on for collateral and yield generation. Coverage of the announcement frames it as a step from a roughly $2.5 trillion crypto market into an addressable base of tokenized real-world assets exceeding $150 trillion, as described by wublockchain.xyz. The Block reported the arrangement folds bStocks and equity perpetuals directly into USDe's backing strategy, positioning equities alongside ETH, BTC, and liquid staking tokens as inputs to the delta-neutral structure.
The development follows a broader pattern of Ethena diversifying USDe's reserve composition. USDe, currently the largest yield-bearing stablecoin in DeFi with circulating supply above $6 billion, has already integrated with Aave, Morpho, and Coinbase, and Ethena has separately proposed a reserve overhaul that would add institutional lending, real-world assets, and prime lending to reduce concentration risk. Other recent moves in the same period include BlackRock adding USDe to Aladdin alongside a $100 million BUIDL-to-stablecoin facility, and Janus Henderson taking a position in ENA while partnering with Ethena on regulated investment products tied to USDe and ENA.
Not yet detailed is how much collateral Ethena expects to route through bStocks initially, what risk limits will apply to equity-perpetual exposure, or whether other exchanges will follow Binance in offering the instrument. Analysts have also flagged that Ethena's broader trajectory depends on institutional partnerships materializing at scale, given pressure from shrinking USDe yields and delays to previously discussed protocol changes such as a fee switch.
