MULTI/DEX, a project on the Internet Computer, has conducted a test of a fully on-chain order book using simulated assets that reached $243 million in trading volume. The exchange infrastructure relies on confidential computing and a subnet of seven nodes distributed across seven different jurisdictions, eliminating the need for a centralized exchange operator. The test employed dummy assets rather than live cryptocurrency to evaluate the mechanics of the system.
The trial was designed to assess several dimensions of decentralized exchange infrastructure, including custody models, automated market makers, cross-chain bridges, and the Network Nervous System governance layer. A key focus was understanding the path toward fully autonomous operation and what custodial or operational risks might emerge as the system scales.
The $243 million figure represents simulated activity only and does not demonstrate actual trading demand or market liquidity with real assets. What remains unresolved is whether the model can maintain performance and security when handling genuine value, and whether users will adopt an exchange that requires assets to be held on-chain across multiple jurisdictions rather than through familiar custodial interfaces.
