Kalshi proposes first US-regulated perpetual WTI crude oil futures contract to CFTC; 45-day approval window.
DeFi & Yields ·
Kalshi has submitted a proposal to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission seeking approval for a perpetual futures contract referenced to the WTI crude oil benchmark. A perpetual contract has no expiration date, and if greenlit, this would mark the first such crude oil product to trade on a US-regulated platform. The CFTC has a 45-day window to render its decision.
The contract would operate continuously from Monday through Friday around the clock. Kalshi's commodity trading volumes reached approximately $400 million in early September, reflecting the scale of activity on the platform ahead of this filing.
Approval remains uncertain; the regulatory outcome depends on whether the CFTC determines the product meets applicable standards for trading on a regulated exchange. No timeline for the regulator's decision beyond the statutory 45-day period has been disclosed.
