Mastercard finalizes purchase of stablecoin firm BVNK
DeFi & Yields ·
The payments giant has closed its takeover of BVNK, folding the stablecoin infrastructure company into a broader push to link blockchain rails with its card network.
Mastercard confirmed the deal's completion, according to a filing detailed by Businesswire, framing the acquisition as a step toward expanding its global stablecoin capabilities. The move adds BVNK's infrastructure to a network that already clears transactions across more than 210 countries and territories through roughly 3.7 billion cards.
The acquisition arrives amid a broader shift in how Mastercard treats digital assets. Rather than treating stablecoins as competitors to its settlement business, the company has been building support for regulated digital dollars across multiple blockchains, including Ethereum, Solana, Base, Polygon, Arbitrum and XRPL, with at least six stablecoins such as USDC, PYUSD and RLUSD now usable within its settlement processes. That infrastructure allows transactions to clear outside traditional banking hours — including nights, weekends and holidays — which historically sat unsettled until the next business day.
BVNK's addition is expected to reinforce that always-on settlement model, giving Mastercard deeper in-house tooling for stablecoin operations rather than relying solely on partnerships with issuers like Circle, PayPal and Ripple. The company has separately expanded its Crypto Partner Program, most recently bringing in Monad to integrate onchain infrastructure with its payments network, and has enabled AI agents to initiate Mastercard purchases through tools such as Crossmint's Lobster.cash.
Multiple accounts of the transaction describe it consistently as a completed acquisition rather than a pending one, with the corroborating coverage in the cluster echoing the same framing: Mastercard has finished absorbing BVNK to build out stablecoin capacity at scale.
What remains unclear is how BVNK's technology and team will be structured within Mastercard's existing digital-asset division, and whether the acquisition will accelerate the rollout of stablecoin settlement to additional blockchains or currencies beyond the six already supported. Also unaddressed is the financial size of the deal and any timeline for integrating BVNK's systems into Mastercard's live settlement infrastructure.
