Metaplanet to launch Bitcoin-backed tokenized bonds yielding 4–6%, leveraging newly acquired Japanese brokerage to funnel corporate BTC purchases onchain with stablecoin settlement.
DeFi & Yields ·
Metaplanet is acquiring the licensed securities firm Siiibo for $13 million to build bitcoin-linked yield products under a new Metaplanet Securities brand. The acquisition is intended to enable the launch of bitcoin-backed bonds—referred to as "Bitbonds"—that would offer yields between 4 and 6 percent, with settlement in stablecoins and eventual migration to an on-chain fixed-income market.
The move represents an expansion of Metaplanet's strategy beyond its core bitcoin treasury accumulation. The Japanese public company has pivoted heavily toward Bitcoin in recent years, holding over 40,000 BTC and funding acquisitions through zero-coupon bonds and other capital structures. The Siiibo purchase adds regulatory infrastructure and product distribution capability needed to offer retail and institutional investors structured exposure to bitcoin-denominated yield.
According to analysis from Benchmark, the current brokerage arrangement may not fully realize the broader vision for on-chain bitcoin-backed securities. The mechanics of how the bonds will transition from traditional settlement to stablecoin and blockchain rails, and the regulatory pathways in Japan for such products, remain to be clarified.
