Perpetual derivatives exchange open interest expanded roughly 76% during the third quarter to approximately $24 billion, even as underlying trading volume contracted about 16% to $1.4 trillion. The divergence signals a shift toward larger positions held over longer horizons rather than frequent spot trading.
Hyperliquid dominated the growth, roughly doubling its open interest to $13 billion and capturing approximately 53% of the market. Several smaller venues also recorded substantial gains: a deployer of HIP-3 markets accumulated $3.9 billion in open interest, while Variational, Lighter, and Aster each posted increases of roughly 78%, 107%, and 66% respectively as new market offerings drew capital.
The concentration of open interest in a single venue and the outsize gains among emerging platforms remain unexamined. It remains unclear whether the volume decline reflects reduced retail participation, a shift to other asset classes, or consolidation among larger traders.
