Russian forex dealers are expanding into cryptocurrency derivatives, with multiple firms launching contracts for difference (CFDs) tied to digital assets. Alfa-Forex recently began offering USD/Bitcoin and USD/Ethereum pairs, while BKS-Forex and Finamt Forex announced launches scheduled for late July. The move became possible following the Central Bank's approval of an updated "Basic Standard" for forex dealers on July 14, though such instruments remain restricted to qualified investors.
CFDs operate as betting contracts between client and dealer on asset price movements over a set period; the dealer pays out the price difference to a correct bet or retains it from the client's account on an incorrect one. Market participants expect Bitcoin contracts to prove most popular given the asset's volatility, which has included multiple sharp declines since early 2026 alongside a period of record highs in late 2025.
The arrival of crypto CFDs comes as other financial institutions prepare infrastructure for spot cryptocurrency trading set to launch September 1 under new digital asset legislation. Analysts suggest some investors may migrate to organized exchange trading to avoid the pricing conflicts inherent in over-the-counter forex dealing, where dealers set quotes directly.
