Arthur Hayes criticizes high-FDV tokens and poor tokenomics, arguing retail investors now see through presale dumps and that such tokens can no longer pump even on Binance.

In an October 16 interview, Flop Labs CEO Arthur Hayes criticized the crypto industry's approach to tokenomics, arguing that projects systematically exploit retail investors through presales and token unlocks. He noted that retail buyers entering at token generation events often face steep losses, with some tokens declining as much as 95% from launch prices as projects unlock previously allocated tokens.
Hayes contended that market participants have grown skeptical of the high-fully diluted valuation, low-float model that has dominated token launches. He stated that such tokens "can't even pump on Binance anymore," suggesting retail demand has cooled for projects with this structure. The dynamic reflects a shift in how investors evaluate token distributions before participating.
Hayes pointed to alternative models as preferable, citing projects that demonstrate tangible product adoption, distribute revenue directly to token holders, and avoid prolonged unlock schedules that create selling pressure. What remains unclear is whether this represents a durable change in retail behavior or a temporary market sentiment swing tied to current conditions.
