BlackRock reduces IBIT in-kind conversion minimum from $25M to $1M, with cumulative conversions reaching $5B.
Macro & Markets ·
BlackRock has reduced the minimum threshold for in-kind conversions into its IBIT Bitcoin exchange-traded fund to $1 million, down from $25 million previously—a 96% decrease that lowers barriers to entry for institutional and large retail participants. Cumulative in-kind conversions have surpassed $5 billion, growing from $3 billion in October.
In-kind conversions allow participants to swap Bitcoin directly for IBIT shares without triggering taxable events, and the reduction in the minimum threshold broadens the pool of eligible convertors. The move may accelerate the migration of self-custodied Bitcoin into the regulated ETF wrapper, potentially concentrating liquidity within the BlackRock-managed product and deepening its role in institutional Bitcoin exposure.
The immediate impact on ETF inflows and whether the lower minimum sustains or accelerates the pace of conversions remain to be observed in coming weeks.
