UBS increased bullish Bitcoin ETF call-option exposure 24x in Q2, signaling growing institutional conviction on BTC.
Macro & Markets ·
UBS expanded its bullish positioning on BlackRock's Bitcoin ETF substantially in the second quarter, according to regulatory filings reviewed by KuCoin. Call-option contracts on the IBIT product jumped from 80,000 in Q1 to 1.95 million in Q2—a 24-fold increase. Simultaneously, the bank's direct stake in IBIT shares grew approximately 12% to 407,890 shares worth around $13.6 million, while put-option exposure declined by roughly 53% to 143,300 contracts.
The shift reflects a notable tilt toward upside conviction in Bitcoin spot trading products. UBS, which manages more than $7 trillion in assets, has been preparing cryptocurrency trading services for its Swiss private banking clients, though regulatory filings do not clarify whether the expanded options exposure stems from proprietary positioning or client-directed activity.
What remains unclear is the strategic motivation behind the positioning change—whether it responds to client demand, represents an institutional bet, or reflects preparation for planned crypto services rollout. The filing data alone does not reveal the timeframe over which UBS accumulated these positions or whether similar moves occurred among peer institutions.
