Coinbase Q3 revenue drops 35% even as profit jumps on crypto gains

The exchange posted a sharp year-over-year revenue decline alongside a sizable net income rebound, with prediction markets emerging as a fast-growing line item.
Coinbase closed out Q3 2026 with revenue of $1.22 billion, a 35% drop from the prior year, according to wublockchain.xyz. Despite the top-line contraction, net income climbed 66% to $719 million, breaking a streak of three straight quarterly losses. Earnings per share landed at $2.51.
The profit rebound was driven largely by unrealized gains on crypto holdings rather than operating performance, a distinction that matters for assessing the durability of the results. Adjusted net income, which strips out those unrealized gains, came in at just $78 million โ a figure far smaller than the headline profit number and one that points to softer underlying core earnings even as the bottom line improved.
Prediction markets stood out as a bright spot, surpassing $200 million in annualized revenue with 82% compound growth per quarter since launch. The Block similarly attributed the income jump to strength in prediction markets and derivatives activity, noting that this offset weaker spot trading volumes during the quarter.
Coinbase's share of crypto trading activity reached 10.7%, while average USDC balances held on the platform hit a record $22 billion. Together these figures suggest the company is leaning more heavily on stablecoin balances and newer product categories like prediction markets and derivatives as spot trading contributes less to revenue.
What remains unclear is how much of the net income gain will persist once unrealized crypto gains are excluded, given the gap between the $719 million headline figure and the $78 million adjusted number. Whether prediction market growth can sustain its 82% quarterly pace, and whether trading market share continues to hold near 10.7% as spot volumes soften, are points likely to surface in subsequent quarterly disclosures.
