Metaplanet denies selling $320M in Bitcoin, clarifying a large transfer as a custody move, while launching BitBonds fixed-rate debt program.

Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich denied the company sold Bitcoin after a transfer of 5,014 BTC—valued at approximately $320 million—between company wallets sparked online speculation. Gerovich clarified the movement as a routine custody operation between Metaplanet addresses, stating the firm's holdings remained at 43,000 BTC. The transfer was visible because Metaplanet publishes its Bitcoin addresses publicly.
The denial emerged amid broader market attention following recent sales by Strategy, a U.S. Bitcoin treasury firm that sold 6,948 BTC this year. Metaplanet simultaneously announced the launch of BitBonds, a fixed-rate debt program designed to raise capital without immediately issuing shares or liquidating Bitcoin holdings. The company indicated the program could fund future Bitcoin acquisitions and other corporate purposes while expanding its capital-markets strategy.
The debt offering introduces new financial obligations for the Tokyo-listed firm; if Bitcoin prices decline, Metaplanet must still service its debt payments. The company stated it intends to expand bond issuances over the medium to long term, potentially moving toward public offerings via securities registration. Whether BitBonds will become a primary funding mechanism for continued Bitcoin accumulation remains unclear.
