US spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs posted strong August inflows but reversed to outflows in early September, signaling potential cooling in institutional demand.

US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded their strongest month of 2026 in August, with net inflows across 16 of 21 trading days and total net assets rising roughly 31% to $99.61 billion by month-end. Bitcoin's approximate 25% gain during August reduced year-to-date net outflows by 66%, while Ether ETFs swung into positive territory with $732 million in year-to-date inflows after starting the year deeply underwater.
The momentum reversed sharply in early September. Bitcoin ETFs posted $236.5 million in net outflows on September 1, marking the largest single-day withdrawal since late July, even as Ether ETFs attracted $11 million that same day. The reversal coincided with Bitcoin's drop below $77,000 after trading above $80,000 in late August, a pullback that interrupted the prior month's upward trajectory.
Daily flow volatility leaves the broader trend uncertain. While August's sustained inflows and asset growth suggest institutional participation strengthened through the summer, the immediate return to outflows raises questions about whether that demand will persist or whether the recent market volatility has triggered a tactical pullback.
