The Bitcoin Policy Institute filed a motion on July 10 to intervene as a defendant in a New York lawsuit brought by Noah Doe seeking ownership of 39,069 dormant addresses holding approximately 3.7 million BTC, including addresses connected to Satoshi Nakamoto. BPI's intervention request was scheduled for a July 14 hearing.
BPI's proposed answer to the lawsuit asserts 15 affirmative defenses, arguing that the five-year absence of movement from these addresses constitutes HODLing rather than abandonment. The distinction bears directly on whether dormancy alone can establish grounds for a transfer of title to cryptocurrency held across such a large number of accounts.
The outcome remains uncertain, with the July 14 hearing set to determine whether BPI's intervention will proceed and what weight its defenses will carry in the broader dispute over control of the dormant holdings.
