The finalization mechanism on Ethereum depends on validator participation across the network. When a third of nodes go offline, the consensus layer loses the ability to reach the supermajority threshold required to finalize new blocks, effectively stalling network progress. Geographic clustering amplifies this risk by creating a single point of failure tied to a specific jurisdiction or infrastructure region.
