HSBC Orion becomes first platform approved by Bank of England for live Digital Securities Sandbox operations.
Regulation & Gov ·
HSBC Bank Plc has received regulatory clearance from the Bank of England to operate as the first live participant in the UK's Digital Securities Sandbox, a regulatory testing environment for digital asset technologies. HSBC Orion, the bank's digital assets platform, will function as a Digital Securities Depository within the sandbox, handling issuance, servicing, and settlement of digitally native bonds—including the DIGIT (digital gilt) instrument and corporate bonds.
The sandbox itself operates jointly under the Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority, allowing institutions to pilot new technologies such as distributed ledger systems for securities operations in a controlled live setting. HSBC Orion was also named earlier this year as the issuance platform provider for DIGIT, with the Chancellor of the Exchequer announcing yesterday that the first DIGIT pilot issuance is expected in early 2026. The platform has already facilitated over US$5bn in digital bond issuances globally.
The approval marks the sandbox's first operational go-live since its establishment. No timeline has been disclosed for other applicants seeking similar clearance, and details about additional participants or testing phases remain undetermined.
