U.S. House Ways and Means Committee to review two crypto tax bills on Sept. 16 that would clarify mining/staking tax treatment and extend wash-sale rules to digital assets.

The House Ways and Means Committee will examine two tax measures on September 16 aimed at clarifying treatment of cryptocurrency mining and staking income and extending anti-abuse rules to digital assets. The Mining and Staking Tax Clarity Act proposes postponing tax obligations on newly minted tokens until they are sold, categorizing such income as ordinary gains, though Republicans are exploring modifications that would either eliminate the deferral or cap it at five years. A second bill would apply wash-sale and constructive-sale restrictions to digital holdings but carve out tokens obtained from mining or staking activity and certain dollar-backed stablecoins. Committee approval would send both bills to the full House floor.
