Crumbs app to turn shopping receipts into stock tokens
RWA & Tokenization ·
A pre-launch app built on Robinhood Chain plans to convert eligible retail receipts into fractional stock tokens issued as cashback rewards.
The service, called Crumbs, is designed so that a purchase at a participating retailer generates a token tied to that company's stock, according to a post on X. A shopper buying at Costco would receive $COST tokens, while a purchase from Apple would generate $AAPL tokens, with coverage of the launch noting the mechanic applies to Apple purchases specifically among the named examples.
The tokens are described as representing actual stocks held in the user's wallet, meaning the cashback is structured as a fractional ownership stake in the same company where the purchase was made rather than a cash rebate or loyalty point. This ties everyday retail spending directly to equity exposure in the brands consumers already patronize, using Robinhood Chain as the underlying infrastructure for issuing and holding the tokenized shares.
The project is still in a pre-launch phase. First invites to the app are scheduled to go out soon, and the platform is planned to be available in 120 or more countries once live. The account's bio carries the tagline "Keep your receipts," alongside a note that the service is "Coming soon to Robinhood Chain."
Two sources are tracking the story, and a follow-up post in the same thread stated that it was the final post in the announcement sequence, suggesting no further detail was disclosed at this stage.
What remains unclear is which retailers beyond Costco and Apple will participate, how receipts will be verified and matched to purchases, the mechanism for custody or redemption of the fractional stock tokens, and the exact timing of the broader rollout beyond the initial invite wave. The regulatory treatment of tokenized equity rewards issued through this structure has also not been addressed in the material released so far.
