Hong Kong is developing an interbank gold token system building on its tokenisation pilot to strengthen its position as a digital asset trading hub.

Hong Kong plans to launch an interbank tokenised gold transaction system centred on a token representing a standard 400-ounce gold bar, according to Christopher Hui Ching-yu, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, who announced the initiative during Fintech Week. The token will reference HAU, Hong Kong's gold price ticker launched earlier this year. The effort builds on Project Ensemble, a tokenisation and digital currency pilot run by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority starting in 2024.
Analysts characterise the step as instrumental to positioning Hong Kong as a major global hub for precious metal trading. The interbank project represents a shift from sandbox experimentation toward what one analyst described as "scalable, real-value production," moving tokenised gold beyond pilot conditions into operational deployment.
It remains unclear which institutions will participate, the timeline for full rollout, transaction volumes, or technical specifications beyond the 400-ounce bar standard. The relationship between this interbank system and any existing private or cross-border gold tokenisation efforts has not been detailed.
