RWA tokenization bridges TradFi's asset inventory and legal frameworks with DeFi's 24/7 settlement and programmability without replacing either system.
RWA & Tokenization ·
Real-world asset tokenization functions as an intermediary between traditional finance and decentralized finance, enabling assets like mortgages, treasuries, and corporate debt to access DeFi infrastructure while retaining existing legal and regulatory frameworks. Traditional finance holds the underlying inventory—decades of cash flow history, established legal structures, and bankruptcy proceedings—while DeFi provides the technical layer: programmable settlement, around-the-clock liquidity, and wallet accessibility. Rather than displacing either system, tokenization preserves the yield and legal certainty that traditional assets require while expanding the pool of potential participants and settlement venues. The core mechanic leaves asset fundamentals and returns unchanged; what shifts is availability and the operational environment in which those assets can be transferred and held.
The practical implications remain partially unresolved. It is unclear how widely institutions will adopt tokenized RWA infrastructure, what regulatory clarifications may emerge, and how custodial and settlement standards will mature across jurisdictions. The technical feasibility of bridging legacy financial data systems with blockchain infrastructure is established in principle, but real-world friction points—legal ambiguities, operational complexity, and institutional risk appetite—have yet to be fully tested at scale.
