Linera shuts down after failing to secure emergency funding

The a16z-backed Layer 1 project told its Discord community it is halting operations at once, citing a lack of money to continue.
Linera's team posted the closure notice on Discord, stating the project could not proceed for want of adequate capital, according to wublockchain.xyz. A last-ditch push to line up emergency funds did not succeed, leaving the team unable to sustain operations.
The immediate trigger traces back to a token sale conducted through Sonar, which pulled in close to $900,000 in pledged commitments but fell short of the sale's required minimum. Because that floor was not reached, every contribution was returned to participants rather than used to fund the project.
With the shutdown, Linera is dismantling its application and closing down its Discord server. Users who had accumulated points through the platform will see those balances kept on file, though the team has been explicit that no future reward or benefit tied to those points is assured going forward.
Despite ending operations now, the team has expressed hope that the underlying protocol could still be finished and that applications built on it might eventually launch, though it offered no schedule for when, or whether, that might happen.
Linera traces back to Mathieu Baudet, previously a researcher at Meta, and had pulled in roughly $12 million across two funding rounds completed in 2022 and 2023. Andreessen Horowitz backed both rounds, joined by other investors including Borderless Capital, GSR, Matrixport Ventures, and Flow Traders, per wublockchain.xyz. What remains unclear is whether the protocol's development will actually continue without a functioning team or budget, and what becomes of the points system if no product ever ships.
