Ambire has launched Ambire Ice, an open-source hardware wallet built for Safe accounts and now available for pre-order. The device features quantum-ready design, dual secure-element key generation, and clear signing capabilities that decode Safe transactions and display individual actions directly on its screen. It operates as a Safe signer over USB, Bluetooth, or QR code, with users able to switch between modes. The first batch is limited to 200 devices, and buyers can either receive a fully assembled unit or obtain board files and a printable case to build one themselves.
The wallet addresses several security vulnerabilities common in hardware and multisig wallets. Clear signing allows users to inspect transfers, token approvals, batched transactions, and multisig threshold updates before authorizing them, reducing blind signing risks. Keys are generated inside certified security chips and never leave them, while the transparent case and open-source hardware and firmware enable full inspection. The device is air-gapped by design when using QR mode and avoids requiring personal information like a home address for ordering.
The quantum-ready architecture means that when quantum-safe keys become available on blockchain networks, users can add one to their existing wallet without moving funds or changing addresses. What remains unclear is the timeline for quantum-safe key support on major chains and how the transition process will function when that capability becomes available.
