Ethereum core developers schedule account abstraction (EIP-8141) for the Hegotá upgrade, with a separate Base implementation planned for September.
Tech & Launches ·
Ethereum core developers moved account abstraction from "under consideration" to "scheduled" status for the Hegotá upgrade, signaling an intention to include the feature in the fork. The decision came after the Frame Transactions EIP was proposed as a headliner and advanced through consideration phases over recent months. In parallel, a separate account abstraction implementation, EIP-8130, is planned for release on Base in September, prompting discussions among developers about whether dual L1 and L2 standards could fragment ecosystem tooling.
The core challenge centers on defining a shared transaction type that preserves flexibility for Ethereum mainnet while enabling Layer 2s to analyze transactions for performance and security purposes. Developers and researchers, including teams from Base, Offchain Labs, and Ethereum Foundation Labs, have been working to ensure that the account abstraction standard chosen for the L1 remains compatible with future systems like EIP-8130, allowing users to maintain the same account across both layers. The move to Scheduled status does not lock in a final specification; implementation details may shift substantially between scheduling and deployment.
What remains unresolved is the exact form account abstraction will take at Hegotá launch—the EIP number, transaction type, and other technical parameters could change materially before shipping. Ongoing discussions occur at weekly breakouts and asynchronously on Forkcast, with developers committed to preventing ecosystem fragmentation while meeting the fork timeline.
