Solana reduced block times by 17% in a network upgrade, improving finality without scaling throughput.
Tech & Launches ·
Solana reduced its target slot time from 300 to 250 milliseconds on Friday, marking the third network speed adjustment since August and resulting in blocks arriving nearly 17% faster. The reduction does not increase transaction throughput, as each shortened slot carries proportionally less computation and data. A planned further reduction to 200 milliseconds has no activation date and will only proceed if validator block-skip rates remain stable. The change primarily benefits applications dependent on low latency, such as price oracles and decentralized exchanges, while also compressing epoch cycles from roughly 36 hours to about 30 hours.
