Sui Devnet processes first quantum-resistant transaction
Tech & Launches ·
Mysten Labs has enabled ML-DSA-65 post-quantum signatures on Sui's Devnet, with full mainnet support penciled in for early 2027.
Kostas Chalkias, Mysten Labs' co-founder and chief cryptographer, disclosed that the network's Devnet environment completed its initial native quantum-safe transaction, publishing the corresponding on-chain record as evidence, according to wublockchain.xyz. The capability arrived through Devnet build v1.82.0, which embeds support for the ML-DSA-65 signature scheme — a cryptographic standard designed to resist attacks from quantum computers.
Developers can now route signed transactions through the ExecuteTransaction interface and confirm them via the VerifySignature endpoint, both updated to recognize the new signature format. The upgrade extends beyond single-key transactions: ML-DSA-65 has also been wired into Sui's multisignature framework, alongside fresh support within the GraphQL layer and the Rust software development kit, broadening how builders can integrate quantum-resistant verification into applications and tooling.
The Devnet milestone follows a timeline Mysten Labs laid out previously, which calls for ML-DSA-65-based accounts to appear on Testnet before 2026 concludes. From there, the plan points to native account authentication using the scheme going live on Mainnet during the first quarter of 2027 — contingent on the outcome of security audits and further testing. That conditional framing signals the company is treating the date as a target rather than a fixed commitment.
A related report circulating in the same cluster reiterates that Sui intends to roll out quantum-resistant signatures on its production network in the first quarter of 2027, aligning with the roadmap Mysten Labs has already disclosed. Two distinct sources are currently tracking the development, both pointing to the same Q1 2027 mainnet window.
What remains open is whether the audits and testing phases will clear in time to keep that schedule intact, and how the Testnet rollout of ML-DSA-65 accounts — expected by the close of 2026 — performs under real usage before any mainnet decision is finalized. The Devnet transaction marks an early technical proof point, but the path from experimental support to production-grade, quantum-safe account authentication still runs through several unverified milestones.
