Zcash Foundation finalizes NU7 upgrade deployment spec reducing block times from 75 to 25 seconds, activating around Nov. 5–6; ZEC dropped 5.3–10.5% same-day despite positive fundamentals.

The Zcash Foundation has finalized the NU7 upgrade deployment specification, releasing Zebra 7.0.0 node software and setting the activation height at block 3,543,405, projected to occur around November 5–6. The upgrade will reduce block times from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, a substantial acceleration of the network's consensus mechanism. Despite these positive fundamentals for the protocol, ZEC traded down between 5.3 and 10.5 percent on the same day the specification was announced.
Block time reductions typically improve transaction throughput and network responsiveness, positioning the change as a technical enhancement. However, the price decline occurred even as development progress moved forward, suggesting the market's near-term reaction was driven by factors independent of the upgrade's technical merit.
The exact mechanism behind the sell-off remains unclear. Price movements on the day of protocol announcements can reflect profit-taking, broader market conditions, or prior overvaluation rather than negative reassessment of the upgrade itself. Whether the network sees sustained adoption benefits post-activation, and whether that translates to price recovery, will depend on how the market values the faster block times against competing factors.
