On July 18, 2026, at block 3,417,100, the original zcashd software concluded its end-of-support period after a decade of continuous operation. The Zcash network continues on modern Rust-based implementations, with Zebra and Zakura node software now handling consensus while Zallet takes over wallet functionality previously provided by zcashd. The transition occurred without network disruption.
zcashd launched the Zcash network on October 28, 2016, after being developed as a fork of Bitcoin Core v0.11.2. It served as the first production deployment of zk-SNARKs at scale, demonstrating whether zero-knowledge cryptography could secure value on a public blockchain. The software stewarded every major network upgrade—from Sprout through Overwinter, Sapling, Blossom, Heartwood, Canopy, NU5, and the Orchard pool—and handled critical functions including two halvings, funding structure changes, and an emergency vulnerability patch last month.
The software's retirement was managed by teams that included the Zcash Company at launch, later Electric Coin Co., and most recently ZODL. Whether the transition will remain fully decentralized, or how quickly alternative implementations will achieve near-universal adoption among node operators, miners, and exchanges worldwide, remains to be monitored as the network proceeds toward the Ironwood upgrade.
